Improve Your Memory - Memory Techniques
Many people sometimes complain about their memory problems. There are some occasions in life,
when people complain that they forget very quickly what they have learned, or they cannot easily remember some
important facts, etc. There are numerous of situations where the memory problems occur. The poor memory is actually
poor recollection, which is possible, though, only when some content exists in memory. In other words, the person
cannot remember of something if that is not recorded in memory. There were many researchers that were studying
memory, while developing various memory techniques at the same time. Even if some data is recorded correctly in
memory, there is a chance that it would not be possible to recall it. This may appear as a result of retention and
stress, and it can be solved by practicing various stress management techniques, tools, etc. Let us further
consider few known and simple techniques used to improve memory.
Chunking is probably the oldest method used within field of memorization. Within this method, the items that are
supposed to be memorized are divided into small memorable chunks (or groups) that are easy to remember. This method
is the most efficient when there is no importance within order of items. It also appears to be very efficient when
there is need for memorizing multi-digit numbers. If there is possibility, you should organize data while
considering relationships within so the organization would as much meaningfully as it can be. Since the capacity of
STM (abbreviation of Short Term Memory) is 7±2 characters, you should keep the chunks within this limit.
Rhyming is very popular memorization method. It is also one of the oldest ones. It uses the principle where people
have natural tendency in remembering rhymes. The use of this method can also improve your creativity.
Mediation (also known as bridging) uses the bridges that are built between the items that are
supposed to be memorized. This method is excellent for learning materials that has word pairs or for the material
than learner can reduce to word pairs. When learning this method, memory experts often cite the example about
learning the name of the Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Further, Word War The Second started when Germany attacked
Poland, so all of these can be arranged as Poland SAW War first. You can see here the Poland and Warsaw word pair
that is to be connected. The bridge that connects this word pair is the fact from history. This technique implies
the active participation of learner within the learning process.
Bed-time recital is technique where the learner recitals learned content right before going to bed. When the person
is sleeping, his or her mind arranges the information in the effective and systematic way. Studies have also shown
that, if the person is thinking about some problem before going to sleep, the chances that the solution will arrive
next day increases.
“Trying by not trying” method is very often (knowingly or unknowingly) used by many people. You certainly often
encounter the situation when you know some information, but you cannot remember it at the moment. You keep trying,
but something still blocks you. You stop trying, but after some time, the information you wanted to try to remember
just pops up. This happens because the brain kept searching and automatically brings the information as soon as it
was found.
