Improve Your Memory Facts

At one time or another we all feel that our memory is slipping and we are beginning to get forgetful. With the abundance of information regarding dementia and Alzheimer’s disease we panic with the slightest forgotten item. Not all forgetfulness is a sign of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Most of the time it is just plain forgetfulness.  If it happens more than usual it is a sign that our brain needs some stimulation. Stimulating your brain is a way to improve your memory. Brain stimulation can be easily done by doing something that you usually do, differently. If you eat with your right hand then at the next meal eat with our left hand. This will wake the brain up to note that something different is being done and it needs to use different neurons to get it done. Try getting dressed with your eyes closed tightly. With this exercise you have to remember where everything is and the order in which you want to put it on.. Even when you lay your clothes out the task is a hard one. Again, your brain reacts to a different routine.

What we do all day also affects our memory. Did you ever notice how children remember so many things? The reason for that is that they only have things that interest them or their studies to think about. As adults we have to think about our jobs, what to make for dinner, children and their friends, homework and school events, church and club meetings, home repairs, grocery shopping list and more. These are things we are constantly thinking about until sometimes we feel our brain is overloaded. Again, improve your memory by doing something different and learn to relax by playing a game, doing a crossword puzzle or a numbers game. If this does not do it take a course at a local school. The latter will get you away from all of the everyday stress and brain overload. A great way to do something different is to learn another language. Learning a new language is a wonderful brain stimulant.

Your brain operates on three levels, it acquires information and consolidates it by putting it in the proper place according to whether it should be stored as long term memory or short term memory then the brain retrieves it when the information is needed. Sounds simple and it is simple. We make it difficult by cluttering our brains with a lot of useless information that we will probably never have to retrieve and cause brain overload. If we learn to relax and learn to play we can improve our memory by avoiding stress. If you have a small child watch it as it sleeps peacefully and plays happily. It hasn’t a care in the world because it does not have much to clutter the brain. Your child can probably remember what it had for breakfast two days ago. Can you remember what you ate for breakfast this morning ?

Good luck on you way to improve your memory. It can be don !
